The purpose of this data capture was to carry out a repeat survey of sites previously surveyed to further test and develop monitoring methodology and collect monitoring data. In fully marine conditions on the lower shore, sheltered muddy gravel habitats can be particularly species rich due to the complex nature of the substratum supporting a high diversity of infauna and epifauna. Analysis of survey records held on the Marine Nature Conservation Review (MNCR) database suggest that fully saline sheltered muddy gravel communities are scarce in their British distribution, with available descriptions lacking detail and comprehensive data. This has been attributed to the habitats being difficult to survey and monitor, due to the large quantities of coarse material which require sampling and subsequent analysis. Similarly, historical data on the distribution of muddy gravel beds appears limited. This data set includes results of sediment coring and sampling undertaken at one site in Porthmadog during intertidal monitoring of the muddy gravel in Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Five core samples were taken using a 0.01m2 corer. The cores were taken within a radius of approximately 5 m from the central mark; and randomly placed without reference to the surface features (with eyes closed). Each core was then sieved over a 0.5 mm mesh and the sieve contents transferred to a suitable labelled pot or plastic bag. These samples were then taken back to the field survey base and preserved in 10% formalin. A sample of the sediment was also taken from each station for granulometry analysis. The sample was usually taken from the side of one of the corer holes, to a depth of at least 5cm, and placed in a labelled plastic bag. Samples for macrofauna and granulometry analyses were given to CCW for later transfer to an analytical laboratory. The confidence in this data is high as the surveys were carried out by a team of highly experienced intertidal surveyors. |
