The Habitats Directive establishes that the management of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) should aim to achieve the favourable conservation status of habitat and species features listed within its Annex I and Annex II. For SACs in Wales, the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) is therefore required to report on a regular basis on whether features are in favourable conservation status. In Pembrokeshire Marine SAC the relevant Annex I intertidal habitat features include Reefs. The specific area sub-feature of interest covered here are the rockpools of Pen-y-holt on the wave exposed intertidal limestone reefs of South Pembrokeshire. The aim of this data capture was to support a report of the Favourable conservation status of SAC features through intertidal monitoring. This data ca pture is related to studies carried out in these rockpools between 2007 and 2010.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Ten rockpools were studied at Pen-y-holt, five in the upper middle shore and five in the middle shore. The locations of the rockpools were referenced by photographs supplemented by GPS positions and photographs and visited on three sampling occasions in the late summer (August or September) of 2007, 2009 and 2010. Note - No data exists for 2008 as the site was not surveyed due to adverse weather conditions. The surveys consisted of in situ recording and the collection of samples for identification in the laboratory where required. The same methodology was employed in each rockpool with percentage cover of seaweeds being recorded together with presence or absence of animals. Percentage cover of groups of species termed ‘aggregate taxa’ (e.g. green seaweeds) were also recorded. |
