This archived dataset consists of 32 datasets, and has been superseded by Environment (Wales) Act Section 7: Marine Species as part of the newer legislative requirements. This dataset is associated with the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (UK BAP) which was published back in 1994, and was the UK Governments response to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which the UK signed up to in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro. Similarly under Section 42 of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities (NERC) Act (applicable to England and Wales) 2006, it is required that a 'list of the living organisms and types of habitat which in the Assembly's opinion are of principal importance for the purpose of conserving biodiversity'. The NERC Act in Wales, is being superseded by the Environm ent Act (Wales) 2016. Under Section 7 of the Environment Act (Wales) These datasets will provide a basis on which to create a biodiversity list to meet the requirements of the Environment Act (Wales) set out under Section 6 and 7, which require biodiversity and resilience of ecosystem duty, and biodiversity lists and duty to take steps to maintain and enhance biodiversity are required, respectively. This includes the publishing of a list of living organisms of principle importance in Wales, for the purpose of maintaining and enhancing biodiversity in relation to Wales. These datasets will contribute towards the identification of marine organisms of principle importance in Wales, and will be kept under review in order to keep the list up-to-date as per Section 7 of the Environment Act (Wale s).
Natural Resources Wales (NRW)
Part of this dataset is sensitive and restricted. The sensitive data is as follows; Ostrea edulis, Palinurus elephas, Halichoerus grypus, Hippocampus spp. and cetaceans locations. Sensitive data must be kept confidential; general release is not permitted due to risk of harm to the environment or third parties. Sensitive data may only be released under an appropriate NRW Licence. Requests should be referred to NRW's Access to Information Officer. Data may be released freely if the sensitive records are removed in advance, or shown only at a coarser scale.

Internal code | Internally assigned metadata identifier | 2001 |
Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | Marine Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Species in Wales (archived 2018) |
Alternative title | The purpose of alternative title is to record any additional names by which the dataset may be known. | Cynefinoedd a Rhywogaethau'r Cynllun Gweithredu Bioamrywiaeth Morol yng Nghymru, BAP_Species |
File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | 4f4c4942-4343-5764-6473-313136343731 |
Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | 116471 |
Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2006-01-01 |
End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2015-11-25 |
Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |
Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | notPlanned |

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The data collation included the use of Marine Recorder to query the plot distribution species. The validity of records were checked. Records that were considered doubtful due to the geographic location and known inexperience of the recorder, were checked thoroughly and excluded if not corroborated. This data is historical and should be used with caution. There are better more up to date dataset available such as the Atlas of Marine Mammals of Wales (111813). Data layers within this dataset are updated at different times, usually as and when new data is available and collated. |
