Surveys carried out to investigate the distribution and abundance of juvenile mackerel. Two surveys per year in March and December. Station, catch, length (all species) and biological data (selected species) are collect using research vessels. The standard bottom trawl used on these surveys was a modified Portuguese High-headline Trawl fitted with 14” rubber bobbins on the groundrope and a bunt tickler chain. The codend was fitted with a small-mesh liner (nominal diagonal stretched mesh 20 mm). The standard haul duration was 60 min and trawling was restricted to daylight hours. Fixed station positions were used and for analytical purposes

Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | Western Celtic Sea Groundfish Survey, Q1 (FSS: WCGFS) |
File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | CEFAS2405253d-25a9-44f5-adc7-2c156e72f1a5 |
Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | CEFAS117 |
Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | series |
Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 1982 |
End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2004 |
Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | annually |

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Fishing over an allocated area of the western English Channel and Celtic Sea using a standard grid. The objectives of the survey were as follows: 1. To monitor changes in the distribution, abundance and size/age structure of fish populations within the survey area. 2. To provide time-series of indices of abundance for inclusion in scientific assessments of the main commercial species. 3. To provide information on the biology and ecology of fish species in the survey area. |
