The different block size for the two surveys reflects the different anticipated average tow durations of the two vessels (nominally 6 h for Benaiah IV and 4 h for Isadale). Additional tows were permitted in rectangles where high densities of cod, whiting or haddock were anticipated. The number of additional tows per rectangle was expected to vary depending on the abundance of cod in each rectangle, up to a maximum of two additional 6-h tows for Benaiah IV and three additional 4-h tows for Isadale. Tows by Benaiah IV in the Clyde closure were restricted to 18 hours of fishing in total (3 x 6h tows) under the conditions of the permission given by the Scottish authorities. |
