This is part 2 of a 2 part project to analyse PFAS (perfluoroalkyl substances) in estuarine samples in a collaboration with the Environment Agency. Part 1 was a survey of levels of PFAS in sediments from 15 English estuaries collected in 2020. Additional funding was obtained to survey levels of PFAS in flatfish samples (flounder, dab and plaice) from the same estuaries and the output is a spreadsheet showing the concentrations of PFAS in these fish samples.

Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) concentration data, estuarine fish samples from September to November 2020 |
File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | CEFASebecdd4d-38c9-4572-b060-19f3c7ba1f8b |
Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | CEFAS21478 |
Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2020-09-04 |
End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2020-11-07 |
Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | notPlanned |
Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | This is part 2 of a 2 part project to analyse PFAS (perfluoroalkyl substances) in estuarine samples in a collaboration with the Environment Agency. Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Flatfish samples were collected from English estuaries by Environment Agency boats. Samples were pools of 3 whole fish homogenised together. Samples were extracted and cleaned up for analysis of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Cefas's Lowestoft chemistry laboratorys. Sample extracts were analysed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) using internal standards and a 10 point calibration series. Results from the instrument were calculated back to concentrations in the fish tissue on a wet weight basis. For every 10 samples that were analysed, a blank and reference material sample were analysed to check that no contamination was introduced in the labs and that the method obtained the correct concentrations in the reference material. The lab also takes part in the Quasimeme international profficiency testing scheme twice a year and results from these demonstrate that the method generates results on a par with other labs. |
