Report following a biological survey of the intertidal sediments of the Humber Estuary. The survey was conducted by ABP Marine Environmental Research Ltd. (ABPmer) in collaboration with Precision Marine Survey Ltd. (PMSL) under contract from Natural England (NE). The purpose of the study was to characterise the littoral sediment habitats and communities of the Humber Estuary. This was done by sampling a number (13) of representative transects throughout the estuary. The report looks at each transect in turn and finally a discussion of the results and conclusions are made. Each transect was surveyed and within each distinct habitat the substrate and dominant/characteristic species identified using both surface and sub-surface sampling. A list of species present was made. Also, the sediment was described using rapid in-field assessment. This information, combined with GPS data, was used to classify the biotopes present along each transect. Further, phase 2 sampling of the infaunal communities was carried out at sampling stations on the middle and lower shore of each transect. Core samples were taken to allow for quantitative infaunal sampling and for Particle Size Analysis (PSA). Taxonomic identification was carried out, within the laboratory, to the lowest possible taxonomic level. Biomass analysis was performed by wet weight (tissue blotted) and carried out for individual species in each sample. In addition, existing datasets from a number of organisations (including ABP, Yorkshire Water etc.) were included. This increased the spatial coverage and the number of biotopes mapped. The report looks at each transect in turn and finally a discussion of the results and conclusions are made. Marine recorder survey number: MRNE013400000013 |
