Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | Benthic marine species abundance data from annual beam trawl surveys in 2002 of the southern North Sea, English Channel, Bristol Channel and Irish Sea to provide data used for the stock assessment of flatfish species. |
Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | At each of the stations, the demersal assemblage was sampled with a 4m beam trawl towed in the same direction as the tide for 30 min at a speed of 4 knots. On avearage, the 4m beam trawl covered an area of 15,000m2 per tow. The trawl was fitted with an 80-mm diamond mesh cod net with a 20-mm square mesh liner. Each catch was sorted for commercially important fish and shellfish, and these were identified to species, weighed, and counted. The remaining by-catch of benthic invertebrates was treated in a similar way. When the catch exceeded one basket in volume, one basket (c.25 kg) was taken at random and sorted. All species were weighed and non-colonial species counted. These data were standardised to catch-per-unit-effort (weight and numbers per hour). |
