The Shellfish Water Directive (2006/113/EC) was repealed in 2013 and the responsibility for the legislative protection of shellfish waters was subsumed into the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC). Under the Water Framework Directive existing shellfish waters became designated Shellfish Water Protected Areas. In Northern Ireland there are 10 Shellfish Water Protected Areas. These areas are designated for the protection of shellfish growth and production.
