Daily folders (18) of Simrad format (.EK5) acoustic data. 18 Echoview format (EV) format analysis files. Excel biological data for 34 pelagic hauls. Continual AGDS data. Hydrophone data with St Andrews University. Objectives 1. To conduct an acoustic survey to estimate the abundance and distribution of herring in the north western North Sea and west of Scotland (ICES area VIa(N) as part of the ICES International North Sea Herring Acoustic Survey. 2. To obtain samples of herring for biological analysis, including age, length, weight, sex, maturity and ichthyophonus infection. 3. To obtain samples of herring kidney tissue for detection of viral heamorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) as part of ‘FC1196 Options for VHS Management: A risk assessment approach’. 4. To collect passive acoustic data for the detection of cetaceans.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The survey was started at 0300hrs on the morning of 29 June and proceeded south through the Minch following the cruise track shown in Fig1. Acoustic data was gathered at 38, 120 and 200kHz from the times between 0300 and 2300 hours. On Sunday 3 July surveying was suspended due to poor weather, recommencing on the 4 July. On the morning of 8 July passage was made to Loch Broom where a second calibration of the acoustic equipment was performed. This was completed at 0800hrs, at which point the vessel sailed to Ullapool to allow for the transfer of staff, replenishment of supplies and to provide a rest day in compliance with WTD requirements. The vessel departed at 1100hrs on the 9 July and sailed to Cape Wrath to complete the northern part of the survey area, finishing at 1700hrs on 14 July and returning to Fraserburgh on the morning of 15 July for unloading. 4164 MB of acoustic data at 3 frequencies was recorded. A total of 34 pelagic trawls were conducted to identify significant echo traces, with 30 of these yielding more than 20 herring. Samples of all species caught were measured for length and weight to establish a length weight relationship. Otoliths were collected from a sub-sample of the herring for later analysis to determine age. Maturity state was recorded and herring were examined for the presence of Icthyophonus infection. In addition samples of kidney tissue from 1050 herring from 21 hauls, were collected for detection of viral heamorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV). A hydrophone array was towed 400m behind the boat during acoustic monitoring for herring, between trawls. The hydrophone was monitored continuously, with 2 minute listening stations every 15 minutes, during which all sounds were evaluated on a scale of 0 (inaudible) – 5 (loud). A total of 730 listening stations were made, which corresponds to around 180 hours of monitoring and will be used to investigate links between fish distribution and cetaceans. |
