Marine Scotland – Science uses MRV Scotia to undertake a deep-water trawl survey along the continental slope of the Rockall Trough. This survey area is situated some 100 km to the north and west of Scotland. The continental slope separates the shallow shelf seas (< 200 m) from the deep ocean plains (> 2000 m) and supports a diverse assemblage of fish, some of which are commercially exploited such as roundnose grenadier, blue ling, black scabbard.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The main objective of the MSS deepwater survey is to sample the populations of fish on the slope to enable the generation of indices of abundance, size and diversity which can be compared over time and space. There are secondary objectives such as identification and cataloguing of the mega-benthos and biological sampling for specific research projects. The survey is currently of a fixed-station design stratified by depth at 500, 1000, 1500 and 1800 and 2000m and these are completed using a series of spatially resolved transects that commence at the top of the slope at 500m and continue down the shelf slope to 2000m. The range, either side of these sampled depths is ± 100 m. The reason for depth stratification is related to the strong bathymetric patterns in species distributions and abundance. In addition stations at 750m, and 1250m are also routinely sampled however due to time constraints these are not sampled on every transect every year rather different transects will be covered across years on a rolling basis. Overall therefore the survey gives good representation of the slope community, although this present design as it stands due to its lack of randomization prevents estimation of absolute abundance. |
