During the geophysical surveys as part of the IFA2 interconnector project a potential UXO target was identified as a concreted mass of chain. Diver surveys identified this as overlaying the extant remains of a wooden wreck. Following consultation with Historic England, the decision was made to excavate, record and recover the remains of the vessel. Following recovery, three sections of the vessel were retained for further analytical study, whilst the remaining sections and timbers, following recording, were re-deposited within the project archaeological exclusion zone. The vessel has been provisionally identified as an early 19th century barge, though no documentation or records of its loss have been found at this time. Constructed with oak double frames, oak and conifer planking, the ship shows evidence of its working life with replaced frames and repairs present in the extant material. Dendrochronological and isotope analysis have provided dated samples, with an indicative primary construction date ranging from 1836 to 1872. No evidence of rigging, fittings or cargo were recovered from the site beyond the remains of an oil lamp and anchor chain found in a concreted mass in the forepart of the vessel.
