Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by J-Power Systems Corporation to undertake a post-consent archaeological assessment of geophysical data acquired during the 2016 survey of the NEMOLink interconnector cable route corridor. The assessment focuses on the data between the nearshore, kilometre point 127, and the UK territorial waters at the 12 nautical mile limit. The assessment of the geophysical data within the study area resulted in a total of 707 anomalies identified as being of possible archaeological interest. A total of 17 were assigned an A1 archaeological rating (anthropogenic origin of archaeological interest) and 687 assigned an A2 archaeological rating (uncertain origin of possible archaeological interest). One recorded obstruction was assigned an A3 archaeological discrimination (historic record of possible archaeological interest with no corresponding geophysical anomaly) and two were given an O3 archaeological discrimination (area subsequently cleared after data aquired), as they are known to have been recovered since data acquisition. Four of the A1 rated anomalies have existing Archaeological Exclusion Zones (AEZs) and it is recommended that these remain in place. Of the remaining 13 A1 anomalies, five are debris, one is a debris field and seven are very large magnetic anomalies with no surficial representation. No AEZs are recommended at this time as it is not clear that they are of archaeological interest. For features assigned A2 archaeological discrimination rating, no AEZs are recommended at this time. However, avoidance of these features by micro-siting is recommended. It is recommended that the recorded obstruction located within the study area, assigned an A3 archaeological discrimination rating, retains no AEZ at this time based on the recent nature of the record.
