Report number: MEPF_08_P76. During marine aggregate extraction and subsequent screening significant amounts of sediment are returned to the sea, the consequences of which are twofold: an initial localised increase in Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) followed by eventual settlement of particulates with a potential to bury species and habitats. Although much is known of the ecological effects of burial at the population level, very little is known about the effects of burial at the behavioural level and less still of the species responses to elevated SPM. Here we detail the experimental apparatus developed to conduct burial and elevated SPM experiments and the resulting behavioural responses of a range of organisms.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The experiments were carried out using paddle Vortex Resuspension Tanks which can provide a range of controlled current flows (between 5-20 cm / s) and sedimentation rates (between 0.08-0.6 g / cm2 / hr) which equate to suspended particulate matter levels between 0-95 mg / l. Nine paddle Vortex Resuspension tanks were constructed and maintained under a 12 hours light / 12 hours dark photoperiod, and supplied with continuous, seawater flow through from the main SAMS aquarium at ambient temperature. The experiments utilised three different fractions of kiln dried, commercially obtained marine sediment: coarse (1.2-2.0 mm diameter), medium fine (0.25-0.95 mm diameter) and fine (0.1-0.25 mm diameter). |
