Metadata: 2016, Baker Consultants, Zone 6 - Rampion, Noise Monitoring During Foundation Installation
Abstract:
Baker Consultants Marine (BCM) was commissioned to monitor underwater noise emissions during the first four monopile installations in order to discharge license conditions (Schedule 13 of the DML) in accordance with MMO requirements. After discussion with the MMO the SoW was altered slightly considering that installation of the first foundation would not be representative for a typical installation process, considering that the first installation would normally take significantly longer. It was therefore agreed to monitor monopiles 2-5 of the sequence instead. The methodology employed to monitor noise emissions was developed to comply with Good Practice Guidance (GPG) compiled by NPL published by the Crown Estate.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Executive Summary: Underwater noise measurements were collected throughout the foundation installation of 5 monopiles at Rampion Offshore Wind Farm, in accordance with the consent conditions of the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) to validate the noise model (HR Wallingford, 2015). Monopile installation was carried in February 2016using a hydraulic hammer manufactured by IHC Merwede (S-2500). No mitigation measures were implemented to reduce the noise; however, a ramp-up procedure was applied to mitigate for marine mammals. Noise was measured at 750m, 4km and approximately 10km from each respective monopile (G041, J02, I04, F04, J04) and the results are presented in this report; detailed results for each monopile are presented in Appendix 2. Additional noise monitoring units were deployed at 500m for I04, F04 and J04 and at 2km for F04 and J04 from each respective monopile. Background noise measurements were collected prior and after piling for a minimum of one hour around piling activity, in accordance with the logistics of operations. The results showed that measured noise levels were comparable to those modelled and, in general, the sound transmission loss away form the source was greater than one would expect according to theory. Correlations between noise levels and environmental factors, such as current, sea state and pile physical characteristics could not be investigated considering that only few installations were monitored.
