As part of an investigative program for the proposed disposal of dredged material at sea BODL engaged Partrac Ltd (Partrac) to undertake an assessment of sediment dispersion potential associated with the deposition of dredged material to be generated during gravity based foundation (GBF) installation operations at Array 2 at the Blyth offshore wind farm (BOW) site. Specifically, Partrac was requested to quantitatively evaluate the sediment dispersion potential within the surrounding North Sea associated with a proposed surface disposal of material from a trailing suction hopper dredger. The report is written to inform a variation application to the marine licence and consequently forms part of the application documents, specifically to assess likely impacts upon the local Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ, St Marys to Coquet Island) that was formally designated in January 2016. To evaluate the sediment dispersion potential associated with the proposed disposal site, Partrac have employed a cumulative numerical modelling approach that can replicate sediment plume simulations. The regional modelling was undertaken using a two-dimensional (2D) approach, to properly capture the relevant physical processes. The 2014 version (Service Pack 1) of the MIKE21 from the MIKEZero software was used to set-up and operate a European scale two-dimensional (depth-averaged) flexible mesh model. The MIKE21-HD (Hydro-Dynamic) and MIKE21-PT (Particle-Tracking) modules were applied to investigate tidal and sediment plume dispersion processes at a regional and local scale, respectively. Site specific field measurements were utilised to support the numerical model development and verification.
