The EIA process for an offshore wind farm requires a full understanding of the marine ecology of the area which may be affected. This requires a full review of existing benthic survey data (marine ecology desk study) as well as benthic surveys of the wind farm site, cable routes and adjacent areas. For this site, surveying the offshore environment involved benthic grab sampling and epibenthic trawl surveys, as well as drop down video surveys on rocky ground where grab/trawling was not possible. Intertidal biotope mapping was also undertaken along the cable route. These baseline surveys were necessary for the characterisation of the marine communities in the vicinity of the cable route and wind farm site, and to identify the location of any Annex 1 habitats (under the Habitats Directive) present. Comparison of these results with postconstruction monitoring will allow an assessment of any changes that may occur after installation of the facility.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Intertidal surveys, benthic grab, epibenthic trawl and underwater video surveys were conducted with the purpose of providing information against which future monitoring of the wind farm development can be compared, specifically regarding any changes in the benthic communities and sediment composition. Benthic grab sampling (and core sampling in the intertidal) was performed to determine the sediment composition of the area, as well as the infaunal diversity and species richness. Epibenthic trawling was performed to gain information on those organisms which live on and above the seabed such as fish and mobile invertebrates, as well as more sessile organisms. In areas where grab sampling or epibenthic trawls were not possible (due to the presence of hard ground) or in areas where potential Annex 1 habitats (e.g. Sabellaria spinulosa reef) were found, underwater video surveys were conducted. Walkover surveys were performed on hard ground in the intertidal in order to classify biotopes. |
