Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by English Heritage to carry out Phase I of a project on a means of selecting sites that are sufficiently important in archaeological terms to warrant special measures if they are implicated in proposed marine aggregate dredging. Such special measures could include protection by exclusion zones, recording and recovery, or some other form of mitigation. The project is being funded with the support of the ALSF. The project builds on previous ALSF projects, notably On the Importance of Shipwrecks (3767), on the developing legal and administrative framework associated with the Heritage White Paper, and other schemes and initiatives concerned with the selection and management of historic assets. Phase I of the project commenced 09 August 2007 and is due to be complete on 21 September 2007.
