HiDef Aerial Surveying Limited were asked by RWE to provide estimates of densities and abundances for the bird species most commonly recorded during digital aerial surveys of the Atlantic Array area between 2009 and 2010. Estimates were produced for the whole Atlantic Array zone and separately for the Project Area for each survey undertaken and for data from summer periods in both years pooled together; the pooled data included data from May and July in 2009 and May, June and August in 2010. Survey data collected by the Wildfowl & Wetland Trust (WWT) is also provided.

Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | 2009-2010, HiDef/WWT, Zone 8 - Bristol Channel Atlantic Array, Aerial Bird Surveys |
File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | d6728c5181cd8eb4acc870e4a872938c |
Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | AC6310A-4E9F-4137-8735-69DD749C67E7 |
Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | series |
Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2009-01-01 |
End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2010-12-31 |
Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |
Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | continual |

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The methodology being used for the RWE contract has been developed by HiDef Aerial Surveying Ltd and is based on aerial surveys using digital imaging equipment. The methodology for video survey of waterbirds was developed by HiDef in conjunction with JNCC. Field trials of this system have demonstrated its ability to meet or exceed the performance requirements specified within the BTO report with current method and protocol directives endorsed by all relevant stake holders including JNCC, S and H, CCW, Natural England, Defra, MFA and The Crown Estate. Aerial surveys are flown in VFR conditions and ideally at 2000ft. High definition video images are taken of the survey area, which is over-flown in a pre-planned series of transects, using GPS to ensure accuracy; transects are selected to provide the degree of area coverage required by the client. For this survey transects were aligned North-South and were 3 km apart. The recorded images are stored in heavy duty disk drives. Following the survey, the disk drives are couriered back to the HiDef premises for review and analysis. The survey images are viewed by trained reviewers using high definition viewing screens and a software image management package that allows the reviewer to adjust and control the appearance of the images and so determine which are birds, mammals etc. Reviewers are not required to identify objects, but simply mark the image as requiring further analysis. Images that have been marked as requiring further analysis are passed to specialist ornithologists at WWT Consulting, who have received training in the analysis of high definition video imagery. Images can be managed using software to enhance their appearance and assist the ornithologist in identifying the object down to species level. HiDef was contracted to fly surveys (two flights) every month for the Period between July 2009 - Febuary 2011 (excluding several months for various reasons detailed in associated reports). |
