On behalf of SeasScape Energy, Osiris Marine Services Ltd were commissioned to conduct maintenance inspection dives of Burbo Bank wind farm (including cathodic protection, scour protection, J-tube integrity and marine growth). Following requests by CEFAS and Natural England (statutory consultees), the opportunity was taken to obtain information useful for the environmental monitoring programme in conjunction with maintenance inspections. Therefore, Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies Ltd (CMACS) were instructed to oversee qualitative biological dive surveys, particularly to provide information on the nature of seabed habitats and species colonising monopile foundations, scour protection and rock armour. These surveys were required to comply with a Food and Environment Protection Act (FEPA) licence (Ref 31864/07/0) issued to the developer (SeaScape Energy).

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | In May 2009 surveys of turbine generator monopile foundations 13, 14, 16, 17, 24, 27 and 34 were conducted from MV Pamela P. Head mounted cameras were used by divers to record video transects along the entire submerged portion of each monopile whilst ascending/descending at a rate of approximately 10 seconds per metre with short pauses (5 – 10 seconds) at regular intervals. Surface scrape samples (approximately 25 x 25cm) were taken from 4 points along the vertical extent of each monopile (top, upper middle, lower middle and bottom) and placed in sealed and labelled plastic bags (Figure 2). Care was taken to minimise damage to any organisms for ease of identification. Thickness of marine growth was also measured at each point. Footage of scour protection, rock armour, mattresses and J-cable around the base of each monoplie was taken whilst swimming slowly and pausing regularly for short periods. In addition, footage of seabed features were recorded thoroughly in a reasonably broad area surrounding turbines 13, 14, 17 and 34, but only within 2m of the remaining turbines surveyed. All footage taken, samples collected and divers’ notes were passed to CMACS for subsequent analysis. |
