Titan Environmental Surveys Limited was commissioned to undertake a geophysical survey for the purpose of assessing the seabed and shallow sub-seabed conditions prior to the installation of an offshore wind farm on Gunfleet Sands, off the coast of Essex. Principal survey activities took place between 15th September 2001 and 19th October 2001. Bathymetric data was collected over the two areas specified in the contract, the wind farm area and cable route area. The data collected was via a single frequency survey echo sounder, all the bathymetric data was corrected for the motion of the vessel. The echo sounder was calibrated each day and the calibration verified by a velocity profile obtained from a temperature/salinity profile each day. All bathymetric depths are reduced to the level of Lowest Astronomical tide (LAT). The wind farm area consists of an elongated sand bank orientate southwest-northwest. Depths observed on the bank ranged on average from 0.5m LAT in the Southwest corner, to 7.5m LAT in the northeast corner. The seabed was of a gently undulating nature and showed signs of rippling in places during the first period of data acquisition but consequent to a period of poor weather conditions these areas of ripples were then not observed during the second period of data acquisition. In the north-western corner of the wind farm area the bathymetry shows signs of ridges on the seabed. These are due to the well cemented nature of the planar and cross-bedded sands which make up the seabed at this point and their ability to maintain steep faces on eroded sections rather than slump.
