This project examines the archaeological surveys undertaken by Wessex Archaeology at the site of the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm. The archaeological recording and sampling was conducted between the 31st October and the 8th November 2005 at Wessex Archaeology. Twenty vibrocores containing material of archaeological interest were split, recorded and sampled. The recording and archaeological description of the cores enabled the archaeological potential of the area to be determined the results of which can be summarised as follows: • The sedimentary sequence is typical of the Southern North Sea. • Cretaceous and Pleistocene sediments are overlain by Holocene age clays, silts, sands and peat. • The upper part of the sequence is Recent seabed sediments of sand and gravel. Stage 3 palaeo-environmental assessment of a limited number of samples is recommended in order to establish the archaeological potential of the alluvial and terrestrial sediment sequences encountered. The archaeological assessment of further geotechnical investigations undertaken as part of the pre-construction phase of the scheme is recommended where warranted.

Internal code | Internally assigned metadata identifier | 7818 |
Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm Environmental Statement- Appendix 15.5: Stage 2 Archaeological recording and sampling of vibrocores |
File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | eba59c80e8a95973a47cbe8e7c743204 |
Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | 710 |
Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | series |
Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2006-01-02 |
End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2012-10-29 |
Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |
Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | unknown |
