Pectenogammarus planicrurus is the only amphipod which is a permanent resident of shingle beaches and it was found on the steep gravel or pebble beach fronting the promenade at Pwllheli during Phase 1 surveys undertaken by Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) during June 1996. This dataset contains the results of a survey carried out in 2007 to investigate whether P. planicrurus was still present in the area. Monitoring of this feature is ongoing and is repeated on a yearly basis. The purpose of this data capture is to confirm the continued presence and monitor the population of this scarce amphipod species at Pwllheli whilst repeating work carried out in 2004.

A visit was made to a site in lower shore shingle at Marian-y-de, Pwllheli where populations of the amphipods were known to be present to determine whether or not they were still present. The species is found by finding the appropriate habitat, making a small pool of water in the shingle and then looking for amphipods swimming in the water. This was done at irregular intervals along the shore. The survey is repeated annually and builds on data captured in 2004.
