In 2015 Skomer Marine Nature Reserve changed designation to Skomer Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). Skomer Marine Nature Reserve (MNR) was designated in 1990. The results of a survey carried out to re-examine permanent quadrats and transects established in Skomer Marine Nature Reserve in 1992 (see separate metadata "Establishment of permanent quadrats at Skomer Marine Nature Reserve") following the Sea Empress oil spill in February 1996.

Six permanent transect were visited and a 50 cm x 50 cm square aluminium quadrat strung with cord to divide into 25 10 x 10cm squares was placed accurately on the permanent markers using a reference set of colour photocopies. Each quadrat was then photographed. In each quadrat the abundance of each animal and plant species present was assessed using a seven point abundance scale. All identification was made in the field ensuring that material was not removed/disturbed. Because of this, identification is given to the nearest taxon. This data forms part of the Pembrokeshire Marine Species Atlas (24328).
