The Habitats Directive establishes that the management of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) should aim to achieve the favourable conservation status of habitat and species features listed within its Annex I and Annex II. For SACs in Wales, the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) is therefore required to report on a regular basis on whether features are in favourable conservation status. For SACs in Wales Zostera noliti is a sub-feature of the Annex II habitat, mudflats and sandflats not covered by seawater at high tide. Seagrass beds develop in intertidal and shallow subtidal areas on sands and muds. They may be found in marine inlets and bays but also in other areas, such as lagoons and channels, which are sheltered from significant wave action. This data was captured to support
reporting on conservation status of the Welsh Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) sub-feature eelgrass, zostera noltii. Pembrokeshire Marine SAC was selected for eight Habitats Directive Annex I habitat types and five Annex II species. The aim of this survey was to initiate eelgrass Zostera noltii monitoring at Angle Bay in Milford Haven.

dataset
This work contributes on an ongoing programme of intertidal monitoring work across Wales during 2004 and 2005. The area colonised by Zostera noltii in Angle Bay was mapped using portable GPS units. Based on the map obtained, a grid of 112 sampling stations was created, each being 50 m apart. The percentage cover of seagrass was estimated in 0.25 m2 quadrats placed each station and various other features were also recorded. These included the presence and abundance of cockles, any evidence of bait digging and other biota present. There is a high confidence rating for this dataset as all work undertaken by professional scientific biologist. This work contributes on an ongoing programme of intertidal monitoring work across Wales during 2004/2005.
