Data collected during the development and implementation of low budget stereo-photographic monitoring of rocky subtidal epibenthic communities in within Skomer marine reserve. A transect line was run from 30m to 5m and secured to pitons at intervals, marker tags were fixed to the line at 5m depth intervals from 5m to 25m and at these depths 1.5m fixed quadrats were secured with pitons. The photographs taken were analysed by viewing slides through two stereomicroscopes, using a hand-held commercial stereoslide viewer and examining the prints with photogrammetric apparatus. Each identifiable species or groups of species and biotic or non-biotic substrate is defined as a category, the occurrence of categories in quadrats is recorded quantitatively. The abundance of categories was estimated using two methods- percentage cover of categories was estimated by systematic point counting, and counts of numbers per unit area were made of certain categories.
