Carmarthen Bay is an internationally important wintering ground for the Common Scoter duck (Melanitta nigra) and is widely regarded as the most important such site in the UK causing the site to be proposed as a Special Protection Area (pSPA) under the EC Birds Directive. Former Countryside Council for Wales (now part of Natural Resources Wales) have supported ground and aerial based surveys for a 10 year period since the Sea Empress oil spill in 1996. The purpose of this data capture was to collate and synthesise records on common scoter populations and distributions for a 10 year period. Data was collated from old CCW reports. A summary of the data has been produced to cover the period 1998 to 2010.
