A multibeam bathymetry survey of a previously unsurveyed area of seabed,
carried out in 2012 between Start Point and West Rutts. This is within the
Start Point to Plymouth Sound and Eddystone Reefs candidate Special Area od
Conservation (cSAC) off South Devon.
Together, the inshore and offshore elements of the survey work will form the
basis for mapping extent and assessing baseline conditions of features to
allow any future changes in condition to be detected. The work will build on
the initial surveys of the area, which have provided the information upon
which Natural England have recommended to Defra that these sites be designated
as candidate SACs, under the Habitats Directive.

In 2012 Cefas Endeavour gathered multibeam data with associated backscatter
data from the areas not covered in the acoustic survey carried out by Cefas in
early 2011 between Start Point and West Rutts.
All survey at the Start Point area was conducted using both the EM2040 and
EM3002D multibeam systems to ensure compatibility with prior survey using the
EM3002D system.
The multi-beam data were processed using Caris Hips and Sips Ver7.1.1 service
pack 1.
A total of 55 lines were imported into Caris, where kinematic tidal
adjustments were applied and some basic filtering. Overall the data was good
and relatively clean with a few areas of noise that needed manual cleaning.
Geotiffs were produced as well as an xyz file and the GSF files.
The 55 lines of data equates to 344km of multi-beam data. The Geotiff was
produced at a resolution of 1m with a vertical exaggeration of 6 and the
colour map rainbow. The backscatter data were produced using Fledermaus FMGT
v7.32. The backscatter Geotiff was produced at 0.75m resolution in one tile
and at 0.3m resolution in 19 tiles.
