The modelling software used for each of these studies is Telemac (Hervouet, 2007). To investigate the spread of diseases within the marine environment, passive tracers (without decay terms) were released within each model domain from known aquaculture sites. The environmental conditions chosen for the simulation were typical of the summer months in each area, which are the conditions permissive for the pathogens of interest (e.g. oyster herpesvirus). For each study site, model results then provide the concentration of tracer over time as an indication of pathogen concentration, alongside other water column properties. The dominant processes influencing dispersal varied between site. In Dungarven Bay and the Bay of Brest, tidal currents were most important, therefore model simulations used Telemac2D. However, in Ria de Vigo upwelling was important and in the Ebro Delta freshwater inputs were influential, therefore these simulations include 3D circulation (Telemac3D). Model experiments used tracer release to represent dispersal of pathogens over 48 hours, from different release sites. This research was supported by `VIVALDI`_: Preventing and Mitigating farmed Bivalve Diseases, under the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme (Grant no. 678589). The model simulations and processing were carried out on the High Performance Computing Cluster supported by the Research and Specialist Computing Support service at the University of East Anglia. The data used to construct the hydrodynamic models is detailed within the associated report. This was the most appropriate which could be found published online, or was available through collaborations with relevant academics at the time. However, future work could still benefit from more extensive bathymetry collected within the different production areas, particularly within shallow areas, or areas which are likely to change over time. The models were designed for studying dispersal of pathogens from bivalve production areas documented at the time, with highest spatial resolution targeted in these areas.
