Samples were collected from four subtidal habitats in the North West Irish Sea, Celtic Deep, Bristol Channel and Carmarthen Bay in July 2004 and July 2005. Data including total harpacticoid copepod counts per sample, sediment granulometry and trace metal concentrations (for some stations), are also available. At each centre station (X), four stations (A to D) were selected by moving approximately 4 km in a NW, NE, SW and SE direction. Four further stations (E to H) were chosen at a distance of approximately 11 km away from the centre station in the same directions (except Carmarthen Bay station E). At each of the 9 stations, 4 replicate sediment samples were collected from within a 100 m range ring (DGPS position fixing) by means of a 0.1 m2 day grab. From each sample, two sub-samples were collected with a perspex corer (3.6 cm diameter, 10 cm2 surface area) to a depth of 5 cm, one for the analysis of a suite of environmental variables and one for the study of nematodes. All replicate faunal samples and a single replicate environmental sample per station were processed. The main objective of the data derived from this microcosm experiment was to assess the ability of nematodes to vertically migrate into native muddy and non-native sandy sediment deposited in different amounts and frequencies.
