A trial undertaken to evaluate the performance of a 120mm square mesh panel
(SMP) recently regulated in the Celtic Sea for TR1 and TR2 otter trawlers. The
use of this gear modification has been mandatory in ICES areas VIIf, g and
northern VIIj since 2015. The trial, commissioned and funded from the Defra
Fisheries Science Partnership programme to meet the UK commitments made at the
EU December Council meetings in 2014, was to assess improvements in
selectivity using the larger mesh SMP, particularly for haddock and cod, in
the context of the landing obligation, and to determine the potential economic
consequences of using this gear design.

The trial was split into two periods of operation to cover the main English
fisheries relevant to the new regulation. Trial 1 was conducted from 10th -
19th August 2015 in the southern area of ICES area VIIf/g/j using TR1 gear
(nominal 100mm cod-end mesh) to capture the summer haddock fishery. Trial 2
took place during the spring haddock fishery between 15th and 21st March
2016 in the northern area of VIIf/g/j, primarily Bideford and Ilfracombe
fleets’ area of operation in the Bristol Channel for TR2 gear (nominal 80mm
cod-end mesh). The FV *Our Olivia Belle, *a twin rig trawler based in
Ilfracombe, was chartered for both trials. The vessel’s own standard
commercial trawls were used for the trials, and, with the exception of the
square mesh panel, both trawls in the twin rig were of identical construction.
The trawl nets were swapped between port and starboard at regular intervals to
minimise bias.
