Cores were sliced into 1cm samples at a range of depths from 0-17cm. These have been used to summarise profiles and describe spatial variance within four Ecohydrodynamic Units (EHUs). Organic carbon was determined by flash combustion. Organic carbon levels in the sediment indicate the amount of organic matter supplied to the bed and how rapidly it is decomposed, i.e. it reflects the balance between input and respiration/burial. Organic carbon content of sediments is also related to eutrophication and biodiversity due to the relationship between the recycling of organic matter and the availability of oxygen. MEDIN 3.1.1
