Specific landing dates are unknown where year only is given. Very little is known about the growth rates and stock structure of whelks. This project build upon recent developments in the use of the statolith for age determination (a statolith is a - tiny calcium carbonate spheres of ~0.3mm diameter analogous to human ear bones and fish otoliths) (Hollyman et al., 2017, in press). Previous work by Cefas has also established that whelk populations from different areas have different adult size structures and this project sought to determine if this is a result of different longevity or different growth rates.
