Several different approaches have been developed to assess cephalopod age including the counting of annual and daily growth rings in the statolith and lately investigating the rings on beaks. This project has investigated how cephalopod age readings could be used for studying and monitoring stock structures around the U.K. This included searching for annual growth rings in the statoliths of spawning cuttlefish to investigate the hypothesis that there are two reproductive strategies (either as 1 year olds or 2 year olds). Another task was to find out whether beaks of *Loligo* squid exhibit distinctive daily growth increments as observed in some octopods and oceanic squids, and to verify these rings by counting daily growth rings on statoliths of the same animals. Reading beaks might answer the question about their stocks’ structure and whether it did change in recent decades with climate change, as reading of statoliths could be too time consuming to deliver an effective number of readings.
