Additional data were collected on catch rates, size and sex composition, maturity stage, health condition and clasper length (males). Three study sites were chosen and surveyed: ( 1.)Lincolnshire to Northwest Norfolk (Skegness to Wells) ( 2.)Northeast Norfolk (Blakeney to Great Yarmouth) ( 3.)South Suffolk (Felixstowe to Lowestoft). Longlines were used by both vessels as the preferred gear type, allowing the fish to be brought on board the vessel in best condition. Once the fish were on board, the total length and wing width (cm), sex and qualitative health state (lively, sluggish, near dead or dead) were recorded. The maturity stage of males was also recorded by visual inspection and, where time allowed, the length (mm) of the claspers was recorded. Maturity staging of females requires examination of the internal gonads, so this was only done for females that were dead on hauling. Maturity stage can be recorded for some of the females at stage D (active), as indicated by egg cases extruding from the cloaca. Thornback rays were tagged with either a Petersen disc or a Rototag, each with a unique identifying number and Cefas contact information for recaptures. During the surveys, some additional species of elasmobranch were also tagged opportunistically, including blonde ray, spotted ray, starry smooth hound *Mustelus asterias* and tope *Galeorhinus galeus*.
