One grab from each station was collected for both particle size analysis (PSA) and macrofaunal analysis.From the Day grab, a sub-sample was taken for PSA using a 3cm diameter corer and placed into a plastic zip-lock bag.For the mini-Hamon grab, a sub-sample of approximately 500g was taken from the mini-Hamon grab sample for PSA using a plastic scoop and placed into a plastic zip-lock bag. The volume of the remaining sediment in the grab was measured and recorded. This sample was to be used for infaunal macroinvertebrate identification. For each faunal sample the remaining contents of the grab was washed into a clean plastic tray using seawater and then transferred to a 1mm sieve. Finer sediment fractions were washed from the sample using an auto-sieve, which sprayed a low powered seawater jet onto the underside of the sieve. The residual sieve contents were transferred to uniquely labelled sample jars using a scoop and/or funnel, making sure that none of the sample was lost or trapped in the sieve mesh. Sieved samples were immediately fixed with a known concentration of formaldehyde solution (‘formalin’, less than 20%). The formalin in thesample pots was subsequently diluted to a concentration of approximately 4%. **CEND 1012** 8 samples were collected using a grab system comprised a 0.1 m2 mini Hamon grab fitted with a video camera, the combined gear being known as a HamCam at North West of Jones Bank Marine Conservation Zone during survey CEND1012. This allowed an image of the undisturbed seabed surface to be obtained for each grab sample. On recovery, the grab was emptied into a large plastic bin and a representative sub-sample of sediment (approx. 0.5 litres) taken for Particle Size Analysis (PSA). The sample was stored in a labelled plastic container and frozen ready for transfer to a laboratory ashore. The remaining sample was photographed and the volume of sediment measured and recorded. Benthic fauna were collected by washing the sample with sea water over a 1 mm sieve. The retained >1 mm fraction was transferred to a labelled container and preserved in 4% buffered formaldehyde for later analysis ashore. MEDIN 3.1.1
