The surface water was allowed to drain before a representative sub-sample of sediment was taken from the most undisturbed part of the sample using a 3cm diameter core to a depth of at least 5cm for Particle Size Analysis. The sub-sample was transferred to a sealable plastic bag placed inside a pre-labelled plastic box and frozen ready for transfer to a laboratory ashore. The remaining content was emptied into a large plastic bin and benthic fauna collected by washing the sample with sea-water over a 1mm sieve. The retained >1mm fraction was transferred to a labelled container and preserved in 4% buffered formaldehyde for later analysis ashore. MEDIN 3.1.1
