It had three primary objectives: i) to collaborate, improve and continue the self‐sampling time‐series of biological data collected on sardine from commercial catches in support of the stock assessment; ii) to engage the Lyme Bay fishermen in a self‐sampling programme to collect biological data on sprat needed for the stock assessment and iii) to run an industry‐based acoustic survey in parallel with the existing scientific PELTIC survey to involve industry in the process of collecting fisheries independent data and to investigate several queries from industry about the validity of the Cefas PELTIC survey (effects of timing and lack of shallow water coverage on biomass estimate). Two out of the three vessels and one processor provided biological information on the catches. Despite the limited amount of data and some issues with the data collected, this first attempt provided valuable information on the length structure of the catches and provided a good basis for a future self‐sampling collaboration. The industry led acoustic survey was carried out in parallel to the PELTIC18 survey to evaluate the sprat population in Lyme Bay (Western English Channel) using fisheries acoustics and pelagic trawling in Lyme Bay, similar to those conducted in previous years (2011 and 2012). Due to localised distribution of sprat, the survey was able to cover the majority of the stock. A portable scientific Simrad EK60 echosounder was deployed from one of the pelagic sprat trawlers and used to collect acoustic data along seven equidistant transects which were also covered by the PELTIC survey several weeks later.
