This map differs from map 16a in that greater uncertainty exists about the precentage cover that would consitute a "bed" or "reef". The Scottish Sustainable Marine Environment Initiative (SSMEI) Shetland pilot trawled through 32 datasets for presence of these beds and reefs, and digitally converted these to this map. "Important" habitats were determined by a SSMEI Biodiversity Working Group and based upon legislation (those protected under the Habitats Directive). The SSMEI trawled through 32 datasets for the presence of these "impotant" biotopes and digitally converted these grid references to a map.
