Catch per unit effort by pot fishermen increases from spring to autumn and decreases during the winter; that by divers is fairly steady throughout the year. To allow for possible regional differences the area was divided into 5 subareas. 1966-1975 The fishery for crawfish, Palinurus elephas, off the coast of Cornwall Off the coast of Cornwall from the Lizard Head to Padstow there has been, for many years, a small but locally important fishery for crawfish Palinurus eliphas. The fishermen had used pots and tangle nets up to the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. From 1945 tangle nets had been little used and the fishery was pursued mainly by pot fishermen until the early 1960s when divers using self-contained underwater breathing apparatus began to collect crawfish. Tangle nets were re-introduced widely in the late 1960s. The divers rapidly increased their landings and the fishermen using pots expressed fears that the divers would overexploit the stocks. A study was undertaken to see if these fears were justified. This study was lead by the Fisheries Experiment Station Conwy, Gwynedd and carried out between 1966 to 1975 by means of catch records, catch measurements and tagging experiments.
