Broods of larvae were collected and estimates made of their numbers. The results showed a large variation in fertility of oysters of similar size (expressed as diameter), and some of the data indicated brood sizes higher than previously recorded in the literature. In twelve of the oysters the brood was estimated to contain more than two million larvae. In 1961 samples from oysters from the east and south coast of England were examined for condition and the opportunity was taken of collecting and estimating the size of broods of larvae obtained. This survey was collated by MarLIN as part of a data collation contract for species on the provisional list of Nationally Important Marine Features.
