This is the first phase of a study designed to determine specific production rates for each macrofauna community occurring in the Bristol Channel, in order to arrive at estimates of production for the Channel as a whole. This information will be used for constructing ecosystem simulation models. Samples were taken at 155 stations, at intervals of 2.5 miles in the most intensively sampled area. All stations were worked during three cruises: in August 1972, February 1973 and August 1973. A grab used sampled 0.07 m2 and resembled that described by Smith and McIntyre (1954) except that it is not spring-loaded; it proved very suitable under weather conditions, working well on a wide range of substrate hardness. Samples were also taken with a rectangular naturalist's dredge with a net bag of 1.3 cm square mesh. Communities were defined following the original classification of Petersen based purely on faunistic considerations. The stations were initially ordered into Petersen communities subjectively, on the basis of public descriptions of the species composition of these communities. This was then followed by an objective classification with the Reduced Hard Bottom community. This survey was collated by MarLIN as part of a data collation contract for species on the provisional list of Nationally Important Marine Features.
