General information on water depth, time of sampling and allocation of samples was recorded at the bridge for each sample. Samples were taken with a 0.1m2 Van Veen Grab. On recovery of a sample, the grab was first examined for acceptability. A visual inspection to make a sediment description based on the colour and type of sediment. And observation of any suspicious traces revealing the presence of hydrocarbons (colour, smell, oil layer).
At the sampling location 3 grab samples were taken for macrobenthos analysis and 3 samples for physico-chemical analysis on metals, hydrocarbons and sediment description. However, from these six grab samples two biological samples were analysed and only one sample analysed for physico-chemical and sediment description. The samples are stored but not analysed until the results are accepted for inclusion in the environmental baseline report.
The top 2 cm of sediment of each sample were scraped off, divided into 2 portions and send for metal and hydrocarbon analysis (sediment stored in glass jars at -20C).
Macrobenthic samples were washed through a 1mm sieve and preserved in 4% buffered formaldehyde in seawater solution.
