The surveys purpose was to quantify the spatial extent and distribution of both the subtidal and intertidal seagrass beds as well as information on the seagrass' condition and associated species. This information is needed to make informed decisions on how best to mitigate seagrass loss as a result of dredging the harbour entrance (which is proposes). A video camera, mounted on a sledge, was towed along a series of tracks. The sledge is also equiped to determine depth using GPS and echo-sounder information. The video allowed for the coverage of seagrass to be determined and described using a semi-quantitative scale. In addition, dive surveys were conducted at some sites. The dive surveys used quadrats to make measurements of shoot density and maximum length. Further, samples were collected to determine species present, epiphytes and condition (i.e. signs of disease). The data was used to draw a map showing the distribution of seagrass and one comparing the current data was that from a previous (2004) survey. The results from the seagrass condition and associated species work is also presented. Finally, two possible ways to mitigate seagrass bed loss (from the propsed dredging) are discussed - do nothing and transplanting.
