Modiolus modiolus records from Penrhyn bay, North Wales. Taken from observations of Modiolus distribution within the bay over a number of years. The author notes; "The shore at Penrhyn Bay, North Wales is strewn with glacial boulders. Many are of limestone, their surfaces often pitted and hollowed, the hollows often retaining water at low tide. On one particular boulder, at approximately mid-tide level, two such rock pools have been inhabited by Modiolus modiolus (L.) continuously, or almost so, since the early 1920s, although the species has only once been found elsewhere on this shore, in similar rock pools nearby."

The shore at Penrhyn Bay, North Wales is strewn with glacial boulders. Many are of limestone, their surfaces often pitted and hollowed, the hollows often retaining water at low tide. On one particular boulder, at approximately mid-tide level, two such rock pools have been inhabited by Modiolus modiolus (L.) continuously, or almost so, since the early 1920s, although the species has ony once been found elsewhere on this shore, in similar rock pools nearby. In spite of many years of observation I have only on one occasion found horse-mussels in other pools, in 1952 when a few were discovered in three similar pools on other boulders nearby. From 1917 to 1949, at first every year, later every other year or two, I spent much time on this shore. From sometime in the early 1920s horse-mussels were always present in the pools on this boulder whenever sought....."Modiolus boulder and immediate surroundings:boulder is roughly mid-way between high and low water marks and is uncovered by the sea for about 50% of the time. .........", (D.P. Wilson, previous director of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom)
