The area of impoverished fauna is subject of the present study, which was part of a survey combining an investigation of benthic fauna, sediment distribution and transport and elemental analysis of the sediment were obtained, from 6 April to 6 May 1988, using a weighted Day grab, at points on the grid with intersections at intervals if 1.5 km. Sampling stations covered the area from a seaward limit due south from Sker Point (3o 45'W) in the west, and a landward limit at the mouth of the Wye (2o 40'W). At most stations, single samples (surface area 0.1 m2) were taken for macrofauna and small subsamples were removed for sediment analysis. Samples of Sabellaria reef often came up in large chunks in the grab and were therefore not strictly quantitative. This survey was collated by MarLIN as part of a data collation contract for species on the provisional list of Nationally Important Marine Features.
