This was done using random sampling with a quadrat. In addition, timed searches were carried out for two topshell species and specimens measured. Phase 1 and 2 biotope surveys were also conducted. These involved following transects, noting characterisitc and notable biotopes as well as random sampling within biotopes (using a quadrat) to acquire species abundance (SACFOR). Sixteen intertidal sea caves were chosen for surveying. All 16 were surveyed to Phase 1 level which included mapping the cave extent, biotopes classified and communities present identified and recorded. In addition, six caves were subject to Phase 2 surveying. This involved documenting a series of profiles (cross-sections) of the cave, noting biotope changes and recording the species present and their abundaces (SACFOR).
