A coarse mesh, of approximately 15mm, was used to separate the large stones and pebbles from the remaining material. These samples were also inspected for encrusting fauna, epifauna and infauna. All extracted fauna was fixed on board with 8% buffered formaldehyde solution on board and returned to the laboratory for identification. Trawl surveys were also carried out where possible at corresponding stations to the grab sampling stations; this was done using a Newhaven scallop dredge. Large animals (over 1cm) were identified and counted on board. Sessile animals were recorded on 5 point estimated abundance scale (ACFOR). The trawl contents were all identified and photographed.total of 56 stations were sampled with the main sampling grid (which contained 53 stations) covering over 60nm. A Sercel Differential GPS navigation system was used to determine the vessel's position. A number of replicate samples (ranging from 3 - 9 samples) were taken at each station.
