The coastline investigated in this report extends from Selsey Bill in the east to the Devon boundary, near Lyme Regis, in the west, and therefore includes not only the whole coastline of Dorset and Hampshire but also the small part of West Sussex between Selsey Bill and Chichester Harbour. The area stretches some 150 km from east to west, but since it includes the Isle of Wight and a number of large harbours and inlets the actual coastline is very much greater, amounting in all to some 767 km. From a marine biological point of view the area is important as it spans the boundary between eastern and western halves of the English Channel, where a number of species both sublittoral and intertidal, attain their eastern limits of distribution. Southampton Water and the Solent are additionally of interest because of the number of exotic species which occur there, transported perhaps on ships or with imported shellfish, some benefiting from summer sea temperatures which are higher than anywhere else along the south coast of England. Number of species, both intertidal and sublittoral, reach their eastern limits in the Channel in the area covered by this report.
