Various types of gear were used including trawls, dredges and van Veen grabs. Resulting Modiolus modiolus records from selected sites of the southern Isle of Man within a radius of 15 miles from Port St Mary are provided. Surveying was during the period July 1946 to April 1950 to provide better information about the distribution of the benthos within working distance of the Marine Biological Station at Port Erin. Samples are given as percentage occurance of species for all hauls in which animals were identified. Serpula vermicularis and Echinus esculentus were also found in the some of the trawls but have not been entered as they did not occur in all of them.This survey was collated by MarLIN as part of a contract to find information on the distribution of species and habitats in the Irish Sea as part of the Irish Sea Pilot project. Modiolus modiolus was identified from five grounds of hauls and percentage occurance of Modiolus modiolus given in brackets): A1 Fine gravels and calcareous algae (23, 9%); A2 Mixed coarse sand, gravels and shells, south and west of the Calf of Man (19, 53%), A3 Gravel and stones, south of Port St Mary (15, 47%), A4 Gravels, shells and stones, south and east of Langness (17, 77%);A5 'Modiolus epifauna' (10, 100%). Only the sites of the hauls from A5 have been entered as Modiolus modiolus occured in 100% of the hauls. Serpula vermicularis and Echinus esculentus were also found in the some of the trawls but have not been entered as they did not occur in all of them.
